Posters

In the interest of educating physicians about blood disorders affecting the patients we serve, the IHTC created a poster campaign. These unique – if not lifesaving – healthcare posters are available free of charge to any interested physician.

The posters cover three patient populations: people with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders, women with bleeding disorders, and people with sickle cell disease. The poster headlines are:

  • Do you recognize me? I have a bleeding disorder.
  • We provide healthcare for women. What should we know about women with bleeding disorders?
  • Appearances can be deceiving: I have sickle cell disease.
Educational material specifically for trauma healthcare

Two of the posters – hemophilia and other bleeding disorders and sickle cell disease – were aimed at emergency room physicians and staff as the main audience. However, primary care physicians and OB/GYNs and their medical staffs can benefit at a glance from the critical messages the posters communicate.

Each of the posters features genuine models: they either have the disease highlighted in the poster or are physicians. The purpose of the bleeding disorder and sickle cell posters is not only to shed light on patient situations physicians may encounter, but to highlight some popular misconceptions about those patient populations. Notably, a Caucasian woman was included as a model in the sickle cell poster. Sickle cell disease is seen in 1 in 158,127 Caucasians, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.

The posters were created in 1999–2000 and distributed throughout the state of Indiana. The “Do you recognize me? I have a bleeding disorder” poster was distributed nationally through an educational grant provided by Baxter Healthcare Corp.

To obtain copies of the posters, for more information about these educational materials, or to schedule an inservice on bleeding disorders, thrombosis or sickle cell disease (educational sessions provided only for Indiana medical practices), call 317.871.0011, ext. 215, or email info@ihtc.org.
