Upcoming Events
- July 23-27, 2010 – Thompson Outpost Teen Camp
The Doug Thompson Teen Leadership Program was developed in memory of Doug Thompson. Doug had a passion for helping teens and investing in youth during the most impressionable years of their lives. The program provides teen members of the bleeding disorder community an opportunity to develop and refine life and leadership skills while participating in an adventure camp experience. Teen camp teaches young men how to mentally and physically prepare for nearly anything, while affirming the choice to not participate in activities that may put them at risk mentally or physically. For photos of the Thompson Outpost Teen Camp, see IHTC’s Fall 2008 newsletter here in our Reading Room - August 28-29, 2010 – Hemophilia of Indiana 2010 Annual Meeting

IHTC Outreach Comprehensive Clinics
To provide comprehensive care to all Hoosiers with bleeding disorders, the Indiana Hemophilia & Thrombosis Center Inc. (IHTC) conducts a series of outreach comprehensive clinics throughout Indiana each year. These clinics deliver multidisciplinary, comprehensive care to persons with blood disorders who may otherwise go without the benefits of treatment from a federally recognized HTC. The multidisciplinary outreach team includes adult and pediatric hematologists, treatment nurses, a research nurse, registered dietitian, dental hygienist, social worker, physical therapist, pharmacist and genetic counselor. In addition to providing routine comprehensive care to bleeding disorders patients throughout Indiana, several outreach clinics are conducted with a concentration on a specific patient population or disorder, such as Indiana Amish communities, or communities that share a rare genetic mutation. The IHTC’s outreach programs are state and federally funded; there is no charge to patients for the comprehensive multidisciplinary evaluation. However, patients or their insurers are responsible for costs of laboratory tests, radiologic evaluations, and other services outside the scope of the comprehensive evaluation.

IHTC's Outreach Prophylaxis Clinics
The purpose of prophylaxis in hemophilia treatment is to replace missing clotting factor on a regular basis to prevent joint bleeding and joint disease. Prophylaxis is recommended as the standard of care for individuals with severe hemophilia. Patients using prophylactic treatment should visit their HTC every six months so the hematologist can evaluate the patient’s treatment plan and make sure that it is working effectively. During the prophylaxis clinic, factor levels may be checked to ensure that the level never falls below 1%. If the level is less than 1%, the hematologist may decide to change the patient’s treatment to increase clotting factor coverage. The treatment plan may also be changed according to changes in the patient’s weight and bleeding history. IHTC conducts regular prophylaxis clinics at the center in Indianapolis and several outreach prophylaxis clinics to serve other Indiana communities (see below for dates and locations).

Professional Development Programs
Partners in Bleeding Disorders Education™
The Partners ™ in Bleeding Disorders Education program was launched in 1996 and has run continuously since inception. As such, it is the longest-running curriculum-based national educational program for HTC professionals. The program offers in-person and online comprehensive education for HTC staff and is expanding to include directed educational components for HTC disciplines such as physical therapy, social work, and data management. Participation in a Partners program is free. Partners in Bleeding Disorders Education is overseen by a broad-based advisory board comprising representatives of the National Hemophilia Foundation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Thrombosis & Hemostasis Network, and members of the national multidisciplinary HTC network.
Basic
Basic is designed to be a highly accessible training program offered at regular intervals throughout the year and is located at the Indiana Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center (IHTC) in Indianapolis. Each session is limited to a small number of participants to ensure a personal, interactive learning experience. The Basic program offers valuable hands-on training through observation of the IHTC comprehensive clinic and interaction with the on-site multidisciplinary staff. The program lasts 2½ days, including comprehensive clinic, post-clinic conference, and classroom teaching. Attendees receive certificates of attendance.
Advanced
Advanced is offered to nurses/nurse practitioners and physician assistants who have been working in the field of coagulation disorders for at least two years. Admission to the program is at the discretion of the program coordinators to ensure a uniform level of expertise among participants. Accordingly, the curriculum of Advanced is tailored to meet the needs of advanced practitioners who are confident with independent decision making in patients with coagulation disorders. Participants are expected to share practice patterns and contribute to the case study discussions. Advanced is held over two consecutive days at the IHTC and one other US national site every year. Attendees receive certificates of attendance.
Advanced 1
Curriculum: Interpretation of laboratory values, prophylaxis, inhibitor development and treatment, orthopedic management
Advanced 2
Curriculum: Management of platelet disorders, rare bleeding disorders, Von Willebrand disease, thrombophilia
PRN™ (Provider Resources on the Net)
PRN is an online collaborative program by the Hemophilia Foundation of Michigan, the Region V-East regional grantee and core center, the IHTC, and Partners in Bleeding Disorders Education. The goal of PRN is to address gaps in current training programs for HTC professionals. Building on the demonstrated success of other Partners in Bleeding Disorders Education programs, PRN utilizes web?based technology to offer online access to selected Partners in Bleeding Disorders Education educational activities. PRN will offer expanded educational content and resources that providers can access at their convenience. The content will include instruction on and support for projects and protocols such as the Universal Data Collection (UDC) project and other national priorities and initiatives.
