The IHTC’s Holistic Care Program for Those with Sickle Cell Disease

The Indiana Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center, Inc. offers multidisciplinary care to patients with sickle cell diseases and other hemoglobinopathies. The IHTC has both pediatric and adult physicians with extensive experience in caring for patients with sickle cell disease. These physicians work as a team with nurse practitioners and physician assistants in the care of our patients. Patients are seen on a regular basis in our outpatient sickle cell clinic. For more acute medical problems, patients can be hospitalized close to the clinic.

Services offered include:

  • Board certified hematologist available 24 hours a day
  • Health maintenance care
  • Vaccines
  • New patient evaluation
  •  Patient counseling and sickle cell education
  • Inpatient consultations
  • Genetic testing and counseling
  • Infusion therapy
  • Transfusion services (through St. Vincent’s Hospital)

Prepared for Sickle Cell Emergencies

The IHTC has a well-qualified healthcare team to quickly and efficiently evaluate sickle cell emergencies. This team includes physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants skilled in sickle cell treatment. On-site therapies include IV hydration and analgesia with close observation. Most IHTC sickle cell patients are managed at home with a variety of oral and transdermal pain medications. If patients require prolonged IV pain management or treatment for a complication related to sickle cell disease, they can be admitted directly from our office to the hospital.

Access to latest research and treatments

The IHTC is involved in a variety of research studies to better understand the complications and treatment approaches for sickle cell disease.

We hope that this research will allow the medical community at large to develop treatments to prevent or minimize complications and to prolong and improve the quality of life for those with sickle cell disease. If you are interested in participating in a research study, please let a member of our healthcare team know.
